All Inclusive Resorts

A vacation option which exists primarily in Mexico and the Caribbean is the All- Inclusive resort.   Some of the more familiar names and pioneers of All-Inclusives resorts are Sandals, Beaches and Couples.   The All-Inclusive term means that you pay one price for everything on your vacation:   your hotel room, all of your food, snacks, room service, all beverages including alcohol and soda water, non-motorized water sports, taxes and tips.   Generally the price also includes airfare and transfers from the airport to the hotel.  So you’ll know exactly what your vacation will cost before you leave home.

Upon check-in at an All-Inclusive Resort, plastic bands (as in the hospital variety) are placed on your wrist.   There’s no need to carry money at an All-Inclusive---if you’re hungry you go to one of the many restaurants and eat!   If you want a drink, you walk or swim up to the bar and order whatever you want.   There’s no slip to sign, no bill to settle—all you do is show your wristband!  Children under the age of 18 are given different colored bands to identify them as being underage for alcohol consumption.

All-Inclusive Resorts offer a number of restaurants to choose from:  a heaping buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner, a pool/beach grill, a pizza kitchen as well as specialty restaurants which are open for dinner:   Japanese, Italian, Mexican, Seafood or a Steakhouse.   These require reservations and may have restrictions as to the number of times that you may eat at these restaurants.

The All-Inclusive resorts are designed to provide a total experience while on vacation;  with watersports such as snorkeling, hobie cats, paddleboats, kayaks, or windsurfing. (Jet skis and scuba are available for an extra fee)  There are usually tennis courts, several pools, saunas, rock climbing walls, volleyball, aqua-aerobics and a fitness center.  During the day, the resorts offer arts and crafts, spa services (fee additional), educational classes and child care with extensive activities.  Each evening there’s a show at the theatre complete with elaborate costumes and scenes.   Most resorts feature movies on the beach and a Disco for late night entertainment and dancing.   There’s also a shopping street at the resort or beach for souveniers.

Especially in the Dominican Republic which opened up to the US tourism market about 15 years ago, resort chains such as RIU and Iberostar built several adjacent All-Inclusive resorts on a wide strip of beach.   This enables guests to use the facilities and restaurants of all of the “sister” resorts in the compound.  Instead of having your choice of 4 restaurants, some offer as many as 10 or more restaurants and bars.   Also many of the resorts in the Dominican Republic have small casinos on the premises and most offer golf packages.

While most resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico are family friendly, there are a number of All-Inclusive resorts that are Adults Only.  Secrets Resorts offer “Unlimited Luxury” vacations with all-suite accommodations and a Jacuzzi for two—a great Anniversary destination!
