San Diego

If you’re looking for a long weekend getaway to an intriguing destination, San Diego may be the ticket!    A gem of a community on Southern California’s coast, San Diego offers something for everyone.  The weather is close to ideal, with sunny skies and mild temperatures year round.  It’s one place in the country where you can get by without turning on the furnace OR the air-conditioner more than a few weeks each year.

I fell in love with San Diego when our 3 children graduated from college and decided they hated Michigan winters, but needed the serenity of a large body of water nearby.  After a Spring Break visit to San Diego, we were all hooked.   Since then, I’ve been fortunate to be able to spend weeks in Southern California visiting the “nooks and crannies” of the area.

For animal lovers, a visit to the world-renowned San Diego Zoo is a must—and the San Diego Wild Animal Park is only a short drive north.   Seal Beach in La Jolla is also a fun place to visit, especially around 4P when the seals (hundreds of them) come to bask in the sunshine in the protected cove.  From December through March, whale watching boats sail the waters off San Diego in search of migrating North Pacific  gray whales.  And if you want to have a “whale of a good time”, visit SeaWorld where you can experience the Shamu Adventure.

If you have small children (or grandchildren) a visit to LEGOLAND with it’s 128 acre gallery of structures made from LEGO’s is a great way to spend the day.  For history buffs, the USS Midway museum is an interesting tour.  The Midway was built in 1945 and was decommissioned in 1992, making it the longest-serving carrier in the history of the US.  On the flight deck, you’ll see various military aircraft, including a F-4 Phantom and a Huey Gunship.   While on the waterfront, stroll down to SeaPort Village for some Clam Chowder at one of the many restaurants overlooking the Bay.

Balboa Park houses not only the California Tower, a 100 bell carillon;  but also the Botanical Building, Museum of Art and the Natural History Museum to name a few of the 13 Museums located there.  The Passport to Balboa Park is a 1 week admission ticket to all of the Museums and the San Diego Zoo.   Nearby is the Mission Basilica San Diego, the “Mother of Missions”, founded in 1769.

Another favorite stop for me is the Cabrillo National Monument, high atop Point Loma.  From there you can see all of downtown San Diego and the Bay, the seaside communities to the north, Tijuana Mexico to the south and the vast Pacific to the West.   On the island of Coronado, is the landmark Hotel del Coronado—as famous and gorgeous as the Grand Hotel on Mackinac.   Golf, fishing, baseball, football, cycling and Frisbee golf are all readily available, too.

On my most recent trip to San Diego, I strolled the beaches of the "Silver Strand" a thin sliver of land that connects Coronado to the mainland south of Chula Vista.  It's a great place for jogging, RV camping and just escaping the business of life.  The "Strand"  offers great views of downtown as well as Point Loma.
